\u2018We may be at the edge of Europe, but we cannot afford to hide,\u2019 you observed on a previous occasion. Whereas many focus purely on their own paths, your work is clearly driven by a desire to help others. Welcome, Angela, and thank you for sitting down with us today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question<\/strong>: Having resided in Portugal for so long, what is the most profound transformation you have observed in the regional lifestyle and how has this shifting culture influenced your writing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As newlyweds, my family life began here in 1982. I don\u2019t question the transformation; for us it is progress as in any place in Europe. If Portugal was thirty years behind in 1982, it most probably is now, but I don\u2019t see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are so lucky to be in one of the relatively unspoiled parts of the world, but unfortunately it has become the escape route for those less fortunate but with more financial clout. Which brings me to the shifting culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I did see (and I hope with all the mess in the world it can continue) was that younger people who applied themselves could progress. With more affordable middle-class homes, families could buy a car and go away on holiday, all the usual attributes of a progressive society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It breaks my heart that in order to be able to afford the material trappings of a modern society with the influx of digital nomads and tax avoidance schemes, the young Portuguese have to move away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re supposed to write about what you know. I like to write about what it was like when we arrived; the fantastic extrovert characters, the foreign entrepreneurs who helped build the Algarve to what it is today. To be honest, I would be outdated wherever I lived.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Identity and Masks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: As an author living in an international expat community, where many people relocate to start fresh, do you find that your surroundings naturally fuel story ideas and themes of secret identities, survival or people who present a different face to the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are immigrants. Eventually, people gravitate to like-minded people no matter where they come from. I\u2019m not nosey \u2013 actually yes I am \u2013 but people rarely reveal what they are hiding from, only what they are looking for. There have been one or two shocking revelations over the decades that have come to light through the police! The Algarve is a wonderful mix of cultures; we are bound to pick up on extraordinary stories. I use a complete mixture of characters and timescales in my novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: Living in a relatively quiet corner of south-western Europe, what inspired you to take a direct, hands-on approach to aiding humanitarian relief for refugees arriving in Portugal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspiration isn\u2019t the right word and it wasn\u2019t only me. There were many, many people enraged by the events on our TV screens who pulled together to do as much as we were able at the time. Donations to fill vehicles with medical supplies and the most mundane necessities that would prove lifesaving; it was, and still is, horrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, my husband employed Ukrainian men in his manufacturing factory. Well-educated people with an impeccable work ethic, and when I met the very first family who arrived in Portim\u00e3o, it wasn\u2019t a choice not to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still choke up when I remember Mama Olena\u2019s haunted eyes. A healthy, smart, middle-aged lady, she arrived with her fourteen-year-old twins in just the clothes she escaped in. She has since passed away; the shock killed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mobilising the Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: You have been actively involved in organising charity events supporting ORANTA (a Ukrainian community support association). How receptive has the international expat network in the Algarve been to backing humanitarian aid and relief efforts for Ukraine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The members of the foreign community in the Algarve are generous and as a long-term resident with so many contacts, somehow it fell to me to organise us. None of us expected it to be an ongoing war, and for a time I was worried that when I approached people asking for help, they might turn me away. I dread being that person always needing something. Not so. In fact, more companies are happy to help, donating and giving their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the attraction of the \u201cPoor Man\u2019s band\u201d, the social events are still raising funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appreciation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: You have received high recognition from the Embassy of Ukraine for your local efforts. Have you ever visited the country yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was humbling but not as much as when I was presented with the signed flag from the special forces on the front line. I can\u2019t read Ukrainian, but I\u2019m too scared to ask about the faces behind the signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As yet I haven\u2019t visited Ukraine, but of course we will when this is all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
