Old Marama raised her face to the darkening sky, her hand hovering over a basket of roasted breadfruit as the volcanic stones turned dark and slick beneath the gathering mist.

When the first heavy droplet struck Kahurānaki’s cheek, he reached to adjust the woven palm cloak across his shoulders, expecting the usual sharp sting of an oceanic downpour. Instead, a rich spice filled the damp air, as though someone had tipped a sack of freshly ground bark straight into the clouds above the lagoon. Kahurānaki wiped his cheek with his sleeve and brought his wrist to his nose. It was unmistakably cinnamon.

Nobody spoke for several minutes. Beyond the outer reef, where the great towering iron hulks of the pale strangers had spent years circling and failing to navigate the treacherous coral maze, the sea churned harmlessly. The island remained untamed and unreached. The storm did not thunder, nor did it lash against the palm fronds with violence. It fell softly, coating the thatch roofs, carved totem posts and canoes in a shimmering, fragrant mist. The air grew thick, sweet and strangely comforting, carrying a subtle warmth that defied the cool southern breeze.

By mid-afternoon, the entire village had gathered near the freshwater stream at the edge of the clearing. Children danced through the deepening puddles, catching droplets on their tongues, while the master carver, Tāne, leaned against a carved entry pillar with a look of utter bewilderment. He had spent fifty winters studying every tree, root and resin of the dense interior, yet the sky had produced a scent entirely foreign to their soil in a single afternoon.

Kahurānaki walked along the riverbank, watching the clear water churn with a faint golden foam where the rain hit the current. He remembered his grandmother telling him stories about the protective spirits of the deep reef, who guarded the shores by bending the wind, fog and tides to turn away the distant foreign ships. Whether the sweet storm was a gift from those ancient guardians or the earth releasing a secret held deep within the jungle, Kahurānaki did not care to ponder.

He leaned against a moss-covered boulder, closed his eyes and breathed in the sweet rain. Beyond the reef, the distant sails of the thwarted vessels drifted away into the grey mist, while the hidden island remained whole, peaceful and bathed in spice.

When the first heavy droplet struck Kahurānaki’s cheek, he reached to adjust the woven palm cloak across his shoulders, expecting the usual sharp sting of an oceanic downpour.
