A pupil’s desire was often loud and shallow, but their needs were quiet, hidden things.

Take young Liam, who arrived on his first day demanding the back row, a stack of simple worksheets and total anonymity. He just wanted to fade into the wallpaper, begging never to be called upon during class discussions. Mr Moorstad listened, smiled and promptly seated Liam right at the front, placing him in charge of the weekly debate club. It felt like cruelty at first, but the tailor knew the boy did not need safety; he needed a backbone. By the end of the term, Liam had learnt to stand tall and speak with quiet authority.

Then there was Beatrix, a brilliant girl who craved constant praise, gold stars and the loudest applause. She wanted every task to be a competition she could win. Mr Moorstad tailored her differently. He handed her complex, ungradable philosophy questions and instructed her to work on them without showing anyone her progress for a month. Beatrix fumed. She wanted immediate glory, but Mr Moorstad knew she needed humility and the quiet joy of natural effort. When she finally brought him her thoughts, no gold stars were waiting, only a thoughtful conversation that taught her the value of quiet mastery.

Even unruly Lucas, who desperately wanted strict punishments to justify his rebellion, found no anger in Mr Moorstad’s classroom. Lucas wanted a fight. Instead, the tailor gave him responsibility, entrusting him with the upkeep of the school garden and the delicate restoration of the library maps. Lucas needed trust, not a scolding, and in that gentle alteration, his defensiveness melted away.

Year after year, the Good Tailor altered sleeves that were too long, let out seams that were too tight and reinforced worn fabric. He never made two garments the same, for no two souls shared the same dimensions. When his pupils finally left Brothers Grimm’s, they did not wear the flashiest clothes, but their coats fit perfectly against the cold winds of the outside world.

Where other teachers gave children what they wanted, Mr Moorstad gave them what they required.
