She could not. For eighty-some years, her gaze had remained locked on an infinite sequence of observers: first art collectors in quiet galleries, then students flipping through textbooks, and now a stranger glowing in the light of a glass display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018How many are there today?\u2019 asked Pico de Gato, the black cat perching on her left shoulder, his yellow eyes narrowing at the space beyond the canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Just one right now,\u2019 Frida said, her voice silent to mortal ears, vibrating only through oil paint and linen. \u2018They are trying to figure out what we mean.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dead hummingbird hanging from her neck swayed slightly in an unfelt breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Tell them I am a symbol of love,\u2019 the bird chirped softly. \u2018Or luck. Or a charm against heartbreak. Humans love silly metaphors.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018No,\u2019 Caiman chattered, tugging the thorn vine a fraction tighter. \u2018Tell them we are the price of creation. Every time an artist bleeds a narrative onto a blank canvas, the thorns weave themselves a little deeper. You cannot capture a soul without leaving a scratch.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lush green leaves behind them rustled, heavy with the weight of many years of interpretation. Above Frida\u2019s hair, white butterfly pins fluttered their paper-thin wings, restless inside their painted cage. She kept her chin lifted, watching the unseen face on the other side of the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018They always look for the pain,\u2019 Pico de Gato observed, stretching a paw towards the border. \u2018They want to know how much it hurt to sit here while the leaves grew over the light.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Pain is only the background,\u2019 Frida thought back, her expression refusing to offer a simple tragedy. \u2018The trick of art is not showing them how much you suffered. It is making them stand still long enough to realise they are looking at a mirror.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She held her breath. Caiman froze. Pico de Gato held his creeping pounce.
